Trudeau Institute Receives $4.2M Federal Investment to Expand Research Facilities and Accelerate Discoveries on Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – Trudeau Institute has received $4.2 million in federal funding, championed by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, to expand and modernize its research facilities. This investment will empower scientists to develop and refine infectious disease models while advancing automated data collection and analysis capabilities.

A portion of this funding will advance the Institute’s research models, enhancing Trudeau’s capacity to develop and improve disease models essential for understanding pathogen infection and immune system responses. Such models are vital for progressing new vaccines, therapeutics, and treatments for pathogens that threaten public health both nationally and globally.

In addition, the funding will allow the introduction of automated data collection and analytical systems, enabling researchers to generate, analyze, and share scientific data more efficiently. These advancements will strengthen the Institute’s ability to collaborate with partners at the regional, national, and international levels in the fight against infectious diseases.

Trudeau Institute is renowned for its expertise in immunology and infectious disease research, with a focus on global threats such as tuberculosis, influenza, respiratory infections, and emerging drug-resistant pathogens. As one of New York’s few facilities with Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) research capabilities, the Institute plays a vital role in studying pathogens that demand advanced containment and safety infrastructure.

This expansion will position Trudeau Institute as a state-of-the-art hub for infectious disease research and biomedical innovation, enabling scientists to translate laboratory discoveries more rapidly into medical countermeasures that safeguard public health.

“Maintaining domestic scientific capacity for infectious disease research is critical to our nation’s health,” said Trudeau Institute Director William Reiley. “By strengthening our models and infrastructure, we ensure the ability to develop solutions to emerging health threats while collaborating with partners across the country and around the world.”

Local leaders also highlighted the importance of the investment. “Trudeau is a uniquely important asset for the North Country and for the nation,” said Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. “Federal support for its research will help sustain and grow Trudeau’s vital work while bringing economic and scientific opportunity to our region.”

This investment is expected to fortify Trudeau Institute’s expanding network of scientific collaborations and drive economic development in Upstate New York.
